Told Ya So; Fair Tax

See... I know a thing or two. When one learns the historical significance of past elections, they can pretty much tell what's going to happen.

As such, you can throw the rulebooks out the window. Obama's victory meant nothing, and it was proven last night in New Hampshire. Guess what? Hillary's victory doesn't mean anything, either. McCain? Huckabee?

Come on, folks... we've got months to sort this mess out. The good part is: we'll be eliminating the idiot field as the weeks pass.

---------------------------------------------
I'm doing some research on the Fair Tax. I have no earthly idea if I support it or not, but I have come to some preliminary conclusions.

1. 23% is a big chunk of change, regardless if the government sends you a prebate.
- Breaking it down for folks like me, the feds send you $391 a month. That's roughly $95 bucks a week. I'm not so sure if that'll cover the costs of groceries and such, especially if you're poor.

2. It would abolish the IRS. That's a lot of folks who are suddenly unemployed, and I'm not sure if there are enough jobs to cover the workers and their families.

3. It's supported by folks like Mike Huckabee, Ron Paul, and Sean Hannity... which automatically makes me nervous. But, it's also supported by Mike Gravel. Despite Gravel being a kook and an idealist, I agree with a lot of statements he makes. However, Gravel is the only Democratic candidate who supports the plan. Obama stated that if he wins the Presidency, that he won't veto the bill.

For now, I think the Fair Tax would do more harm than good, simply because I'm barely surviving now. Add in the 23% bonus prize, and I just may crumble. However, I need more information... so I'll dig.

Read the book about it. It's a cheap book, and if you don't want to buy it, you can borrow mine.

1. The 23% increase will almost certainly be offset by a 23% decrease. Right now you are paying 23% of every product you buy in embedded taxes. That's where they got the number "23%". The Fair Tax doesn't abolish a tax system completely - it replaces it.

Counterargument to that is: Why won't the companies just be greedy and keep the change? Answer: Because we are a nation of entrepreneurs. All it will take is one guy making a half-decent copy of whichever product, and he'll become rich at the expense of all the older companies who are keeping their prices up.

2. The workers at the IRS can find other jobs. Plus, it doesn't bother me that they have to look for a job. Their current job violates my (original) Constitutional right to not be taxed on my income. The 16th Amendment made it legal, but it doesn't make it right. Repeal the 16th Amendment!!

3. What's wrong with Mike Huckabee? The plan was made by some of the best minds in economics today. People from little schools called Harvard and Yale. Just because a politician endorses it doesn't mean they created it.

I'd like to borrow yours.

That's interesting; I'd like to know more about that.

Possibly. But again, without digging deeper (which I will)... I'm looking at the bottom up, not the top down.

Ha. You know I'm all for change. In fact, the Constitution sets itself up for change, as the founding fathers knew they were imperfect.

Here's the deal: the I.R.S. employs over 115,000 people... making it our largest federal bureaucracy. That's a lot of jobs that can be lost. Now, because of the financial relief assumed by the Fair Tax... more jobs can be created in the private sector.

But still, those 115,000 and their families are going to have it tough. However, you're right; that's not a good enough reason to stop the Fair Tax... but, it's a very valid reason to study the Fair Tax further.

I know that. But still, anytime a Republican says anything... "my godless hippie liberal radar" goes off, making me incapable of seeing logic. You know... liberals deal with emotion, not logic. ;)

Huckabee makes me very, very nervous. See previous blog posts for reasons why.

As for the Harvard/Yale thing... they have also produced more than their fair share of idiots. A diploma means absolutely nothing.

Check this out: if you're a red, try Hillary "Republicans Must Die" Clinton and John "I believe in everything" Kerry.

And if you're a blue, try The Decider Himself and Dick "Mephistopheles" Cheney (he didn't graduate from there).
